Pluteus umbrosus (Pers. ex Fr.) Kummer Samtiger Dachpilz Plutée obsur Velvet Shield. Cap 3–9cm across, convex, sepia covered in minute date brown velvety scales, more densely on the irregular ridges and near the centre. Stem 30–90 x 4–12mm, white covered in minute brown velvety scales. Flesh white. Gills whitish then pink with a conspicuous dark brown edge. Pleurocystidia thin walled, hyaline, bottle-shaped. Spore print pink. Spores subglobose, 6–7 x 4–5um. Cap cuticle filamentous; the scales formed of slightly fusiform or elongated clavate elements. Habitat on rotting deciduous wood. Season autumn. Uncommon. Edible. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.) Distribution, America and Europe.
